Our favourite way to spend a day in the valley — the same notes we send guests before they arrive.
First light
Five minutes from the Barn, the Never Never River runs crystal-clear out of the World Heritage rainforest. Go early, while the valley is still holding its mist, and you will likely have a rock pool entirely to yourself.
Host tip: the water is bracing year-round. Bring a towel and leave only footprints.
Mid-morning
Eight minutes north, Bellingen's tree-lined streets are full of artisan boutiques, organic cafes and old-fashioned shopfronts. Linger over a long breakfast, then wander the markets if your stay falls on a market weekend.
Host tip: park once on Hyde Street and walk the whole town in an afternoon.
The long middle
Follow the historic loop roads and the Waterfall Way up the escarpment into Dorrigo National Park. Ancient walking tracks, cascading waterfalls and lookouts that take in the whole valley — this is the country that shaped the landscape you look at from the deck.
Host tip: take the scenic route home via the Promised Land loop and stop at the farm gates.
Late afternoon
Return for the hour the valley does best. A cold drink on the deck, the escarpment turning gold, and Old Man Dreaming catching the last of the light across the ridge.
Host tip: fire up the Weber early — dinner tastes better outdoors.
After dark
No streetlights, no neighbours, no noise. Wrap up, pour something red, and watch the stars come down over the paddocks. This is the part guests write to us about.
Host tip: winter nights call for the indoor fireplace instead — and it is just as good.

Getting here
The Barn is in Gleniffer, in the Promised Land valley — about 8 minutes north of Bellingen and a little over 30 minutes from the coast.
Best seasons
Summer for swimming holes and long evenings, autumn and winter for the fireplace, misty mornings and the clearest mountain views.
What to bring
Swimmers, walking shoes, a bottle of something nice and a book you have been meaning to read. We look after the rest.
The valley
The Promised Land is a living farming community and a rainforest catchment. Drive slowly, take your rubbish home, and leave the swimming holes as you found them.
